The best defense against scams is preparation. Research and save a reputable locksmith's number in your phone before you ever need one. Check Google reviews, verify their business address, and confirm they specialize in automotive work.
Get a Quote Before They Start
A legitimate automotive locksmith will give you a quote over the phone and confirm it when they arrive — before starting any work. If the price changes dramatically upon arrival, send them away. You have the right to refuse service.
Watch for These Red Flags
Be suspicious if:
- They claim the lock must be drilled (almost never necessary for car lockouts)
- They arrive without proper tools and suggest towing to a shop
- They quote one price on the phone and a much higher price on-site
- They can't provide a business card or company identification
- They pressure you to make quick decisions
